4 Reasons Why No City Celebrates Winter Better Than Bloomington


There’s winter, and then there’s winter in Bloomington, Indiana. From festive lights to holiday concerts and fun for all ages – wintertime in Bloomington is truly a sight to behold. At evolve Bloomington, we’ve compiled a list of four cheery and charming events to help you experience the wonder that is winter in B-town.

Winter Lights, December Nights

What better way to celebrate winter than with a party under thousands of twinkling lights? Winter Lights, December Nights is an annual weekend event that takes place at Switchyard Park. There will be live entertainment, photo ops, food trucks, and so much more. And when you’re not participating in all the organized fun, you can take a stroll along the park’s paved walking path, which will be illuminated by an impressive light display.

Date & Time: Friday, Dec. 10, from 5-8 PM & Saturday, Dec. 11, from 4-8 PM

Hoosier Basketball

While classes may be done for the winter break, campus is home to the fast-paced action of Indiana University men’s and women's Division I basketball. So text your crew, purchase some tickets if you don’t have season tickets already, make the short walk15-minute walk to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, and cheer your beloved Hoosiers on to victory.

Straight No Chaser Holiday Concert

Whether you're listening to carolers around downtown Bloomington or just blasting your favorite holiday songs at home, music is synonymous with the season. So, why not make a holiday concert one of your winter events and head over to the IU Auditorium for the return of Indiana University's own Straight No Chaser? These local a cappella legends will be performing plenty of holiday songs and several hits you're sure to love.

Date & Time: Friday, Dec. 17, from 8-10 PM

Canopy of Lights

Why visit Bloomington during the winter months? For the festive atmosphere? The decorations? The hot, sweet beverages on chilly evenings? All of the above! The best of Bloomington is on full display downtown under the Canopy of Lights. Another beautiful Bloomington tradition, the Canopy of Lights event begins on Nov. 26 with a lighting ceremony hosted by Santa himself. Hundreds of lights strung from the Monroe County Courthouse illuminate Bloomington all winter long. You can cruise the shops downtown, chow down on tasty food from the top-notch dining options, or enjoy peaceful walks as you soak in all the luminous beauty around you.
